Pentagon Report Concludes Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute contained particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the group allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he shared, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Response

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public in the coming days.
