A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
