European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
