Colombia's Leader Says 'I Would Return to Arms Once More' should United States Intervenes Militarily.

President Trump and President Gustavo Petro have escalated the tone of their exchange, heightening tensions between the two countries following American military units struck Venezuela to remove President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He operates narcotics facilities and production sites and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Rising Rhetoric and Accusations

Talking to journalists over the weekend, the American leader suggested analogous armed intervention against Bogotá, stating the country faces serious problems and governed by a problematic figure who enjoys creating the drug and trafficking it to the United States."

Although Colombia remains the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the trade.

A Deteriorating Alliance

This nation has long been a staunch collaborator of the United States in the fight against narcotics trade and received cross-party backing in Washington, however, the relationship have deteriorated markedly after Trump assumed the presidency.

Its narcotics trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations such as the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members laid down arms subsequent to a landmark accord.

Petro's Firm Answer

Upon being questioned whether military intervention like that in Venezuela was being considered against his country, Trump said: "It sounds good to me."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed decades ago, rejected the accusations. "I am not an illegitimate leader and I am not a narco," he declared.

"The US president speaks uninformed. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a post.

"If they [the US] bomb peasants, they will turn into a multitude of fighters in the hills. And should they arrest the nation's leader, which many of the country admires and supports, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the people," he admonished.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed part of his youth belonging in the left-wing M-19 armed organization though it is believed that he never engaged in fighting. Upon leaving the group, he was involved in writing the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of the capital city before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I swore to never again hold arms again ... but for Colombia I would take up arms again," he vowed.

Heightened Measures and Cross-Political Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Petro's security detail had received additional support.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, yet figures from across Colombian politics have denounced the possibility of American military action targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Strains

The US cancelled his travel authorization following he encouraged American soldiers to refuse orders that violate law. Months later, the US enacted asset freezes on Petro, his spouse and a number of associates.

Concurrently while America bolstered its forces in the region and bombing suspected drug boats against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets also carried out attacks on boats off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
